Living the retirement life can be lots of fun. Hopefully, you will have the time and the money to enjoy the things you weren't able to do when you were working and raising a family. However, spend some time before retirement and once you enter your retirement years making sure that you are not neglecting your health. How many times have we heard about someone that just retired having a major health crisis that changed the entire direction that their post-work life took. Of course, there are no guarantees about how your health will hold up, but there is a good chance that staying active, and eating healthy will add quality to the your life.
So what should you be doing? There's always many factors to consider like how active you were before retirement, do you have the money to pay for a gym membership, and where in your new schedule does exercise fit? When I first retired, I was more active than I had ever been, and loved it. I joined the YMCA, and another fitness club closer to my home. I started playing racquetball 2-3 times a week. And after a few years, I decided that maybe it was time for a gentler form of exercise. And I took up Pickleball, and still play today. I did hit a bit of a roadblock about a year ago when I ended up with a brain bleed and spent 3 days in the hospital. It was a scary time for me, and I am happy to say that there doesn't seem to be any long term residual effects. And I am also sorry to say that a number of people who experienced the same as I did, unfortunately didn't fare as well. I believe, with all my heart, that my active lifestyle contributed to my recovery.
If you are a Senior with Medicare Advantage, be sure to check out Silver Sneakers. This is a FREE MEMBERSHIP to health clubs. I went from paying about $70 a month at the YMCA to a completely free account because of Silver Sneakers. Click the image below for more information.
Here are a few suggestions that are really pretty easy. Walk in your neighborhood, swim in your pool if you have one, dance in the living room (one of my favorites), do stretches every day, watch and participate in a Yoga class on TV. And one of my very favorite exercises at home is using a rebounder/trampoline that you can set up right in your own home. There are numerous kinds, prices, sizes, etc. and I personally chose one that has a handle bar on it. Check out the rebounders/trampolineon Amazon for your best deals. Be sure to read the reviews on which would work best for you. Stay safe and healthy...
