"What's the Best Way to Back Up Your Tech Data and Protect Your Information?"

Updated: Mar 22

We all know we 'should' be protecting our devices, but how many of us actually do? It probably does not surprise you that many people don't get it done.

What should we be protecting? Let's just start with pictures and videos. The days of the photo albums are pretty much long gone. Birthday parties, graduations, weddings, family vacations are only a few of the memories we want to protect. Then, there are important documents you don't want to lose.

You may be thinking, "How would I lose those things?" Here's a quick story about some friends of mine, a married couple, that travel all the time, with no problem. While in Hong Kong waiting to board a ship for a 7 day cruise, the husband had his phone stolen. He didn't realize it right away and by the time he did, it was too late. They were out of the country, about to get on a ship that may not have good internet service. Needless to say it was an extremely stressful time for them. Fortunately, he had some back up for passwords, but not much else. He contacted Apple and they wiped his phone clean so the thief wasn't able to do any more harm. BUT, all his photos and videos of family, work, vacations, holidays were gone, never to be recovered. Probably about 20 years of memories just 'gone'.

Remember, that was a thief, but how many phones are lost, left behind, or damaged beyond repair on a daily basis?

Some of the reasons that people don't get their data protected are:

1.cost

2. don't know who to use to get it done

3. just haven't taken the time to do it

4. don't know how

5.think they don't need it

Here are some things to help you decide. First, you need to decide how many devices you want to back up. Is it just you or are there others in your family that need their data protected, as well? Are you constantly being reminded that you are running out of memory and need to upgrade? And, that usually has a cost attached to it.

Adding more memory is different than using a back up system that 'stores' your data elsewhere. Right now on my iPhone and iPad, Apple provides me with a back-up system in my iCloud. However, when it fills up, I need to pay for it to hold more data or delete things from my devices to make room for new data, only to repeat again when I have reached my new limit.

Most plans only cover one device or maybe the devices that are personally owned by the owner. There are other options, however, and one that I am involved with is extremely cost effective (you can add 6 family members)...for one low price.
